I did a little shopping this week. Lately I have been so busy that I have not shopped like I usually do and it is starting to show. Last week we were stuck at home thanks to the snow… which turned to ice. Here in Georgia we are just not equipped to deal with ice, so we were stuck at home for a few days. We did attempt to get out once –after going less than a mile and watching several cars slide off the road we decided there was nothing we needed that was worth the risk!! Although my stockpile is still massive there are a few deficit areas. I completely used all of my flour and sugar last weekend. Also–I don’t have a lot of variety of meats. I have plenty of pork, a few turkeys and that is about it!! My husband was also completely out of Caffeine Free Diet Coke–his addiction. So I blew through my sugar making him pitchers of sweet tea. He was working hard in the basement so it was the least I could do 🙂
I did not completely restock this week but I purchased enough to hold us for at least a week or two. I am hoping I can score more Register Rewards to restock my flour, sugar and grab some more coke for my hubby (hopefully Walgreens will cooperate and keep the Bayer Monitors stocked!!) I was able to get enough meat for at least 8 meals and I will throw in some pork so I should be able to stretch my meat for two weeks. I also scored a FABULOUS deal at Kroger on Hormel Cure 81 half hams. They had mismarked the half hams so I was able to score four hams that were originally over $14 each for about $8 each AND I had a $3/1 coupon for each — bringing the price down to around $5 a piece!! Woo Hoo!!
I am determined to devote more time to planning my shopping list. It’s funny as I report tons of deals here on I Heart Publix and over on I Heart Saving Money but I have been so busy I have not been able to take advantage of most of them! So I am going to inventory my pantry and stockpile and work hard to get it back in shape.
So this week I spent $46.67 for about $237 worth of products. That means I saved about 81% this week.

OK. I hope I dont get blasted for this, but you mentioned sweet tea. My hubby also loves sweet tea, but I STINK at making it. I have even bought Iced tea makers and still cant make it. I either brew the tea too strong, or too weak, or not sugary enough or too sugary. You get the drift. I would LOVE to shock my husband and actually make him a pitcher of sweet tea. Can anyone help? Believe it or not, Publix Sweet Tea is the exact sweetness and strength that he loves. Maybe that helps?!?! Hugs to whomever out there could make my day!! Stephanie
Stephanie- I’m not sure what tea maker you are using, but I have the 3quart Mr. Coffee kind. My husband likes the sweet tea at publix, so I will take a stab at this and hopefully it will help you out. The tea really depends on a few things, the size bags you are using, the strength of the tea, and the amount of sugar. We use Lipton, I put in 3 small bags or 2 family sized bags. The setting for strength is permanently set on just under the letter B in BREW STRENGTH (it is old 😉 so that is fairly weak. When it is turned on and the water is hot, we add in the sugar (make sure you don’t do it after you add the water or the sugar might not mix well). We put in about 3/4 of a cup, maybe a smidge more. We don’t add ice in ours like the pitcher instructions suggest. We just fill it up with water to a little lower than the pour spout, after the sugar is added (and mixed well) and it is done brewing. We toss out tea after 24 hours because it doesn’t taste very good after that time. I hope I didn’t oversimplify this, I’m just not sure the specific problem you are having and am trying to cover everything. 🙂
You may want to try starting somewhere around what I gave you and if he says that it is too sweet or isn’t strong enough, adjust from there. Try to remember what you used the previous pitcher and see if you can’t find the exact settings for the brew that suits you best. 🙂
Liz THANKS!!! I will try it! I have the Mr. Coffee one you are referring too! Im going to go get the lipton small bags like you suggest as well. I appreciate it!
Use Luzianne tea if you want real Southern tea. Regular or Decaf. Lipton has a bitter aftertaste.
The family size tea bags are cheaper and you don’t have to use so many of those little bags. Personally, I find 2 cups of sugar for a gallon of tea to be TOO SWEET. Use 1 cup and see how you like it. Sugar needs to be dissolved in hot liquids. We do a littler experiment in Physical Science every year to show this concept. Splenda and other sugar substitutes will dissolve in cold liquids.
When they are Buy 1 Get 1 Free, I stock up at Publix.
3 Quarts water
2 cups Sugar
4 family size tea bags.
Bring water to a rolling boil, add sugar and stir to dissolve,
Add 4 tea bags. Stir. Let sit 20 minutes,.
Pour into a gallon container. Fill up with cool water.
Refrigerate or serve immediately with ice.
