In my days before having children and the entering the world of blogging I used to work with special needs children and contracted with the local school systems. In my experience working with kids I found that hands on experience was one of the best ways to make information meaningful and often helped with comprehension and skill acquisition! One of the best ways to provide this hand on experience is through field trips. Field trips are a way to provide a child with educational information in a fun and stimulating environment outside of their typical classroom experience. If you have kids I am sure you can attest to the fact that they attend so much more when they are having fun!!
Many school sytems around the country are experiencing massive budget cuts. Here in the metro Atlanta area, teachers are dealing with mandatory furlough days, many schools are closing and educational programs such as field trips are being suspended or completely discontinued!! According to a 2009 report from The American Association of School Administrators, it’s estimated that over the course of the current school year, the number of school districts eliminating field trips will increase by 56 percent. That’s more than 30,000 schools. That just breaks my heart!
I am just thrilled that the folks over at Lunchables have launched a new program called Field Trips For All as part of their new initiative called Project Potential. The folks at Lunchables feel that field trips are a great way to open a child’s eyes to the world beyond their classroom. I think this program could not have come at a better time! Field Trips For All will be giving 50 classrooms from around the country a free inspirational educational experience!!
Anyone 6 years of age or older can nominate a deserving classroom by going to www.lunchables.com and submitting a nomination. I can remember so many of my fun field trips and I hope that when my guys are school aged they will have the same opportunity to create some great memories too! Since my boys are not in grades 1-8 yet I chose to nominate my good friend’s 3rd grade classroom. Her school is one of the many with massive cutbacks so I am keeping my fingers crossed that her class is chosen as a winner!!
Check out the following field trip that a group of students were able to take. Then head over to www.lunchables.com and submit your nomination!!
