How did you celebrate Earth Day’s 40th anniversary?? While the actual day designated to bring attention to the environmental movement has passed it is still very important that we are conscious of the various things we can do to ensure the earth remains a healthy and sustainable planet for all of us. Cascadian Farm wants you to join their efforts by pledging to follow a few eco-friendly tips on Facebook. You can choose from eight different pledges, ranging from reusing clothes to reducing your speed while driving on the highway, and find the one that fits your lifestyle. For each person that signs a pledge now through May 31, 2010, Cascadian Farm will donate $1, up to $40,000, to the Organic Farming Research Foundation, which fosters the improvement and widespread adoption of organic farming systems.
As the Organic Farming Research Foundation continues to sow seeds to transform agriculture, you can do your part to initiate a positive change for healthier foods and a healthier earth by going HERE and signing the pledge that´s right for you. Did you know that the simple act of unplugging electronics when you aren’t using them not only reduces energy, but could save you as much as 10 percent on your electric bill! There are so many little things that each person can do to make a world of change!
Dedicated to organic goodness since 1972, Cascadian Farm products are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, chemical fertilizers or genetically engineered ingredients. With your help, we can all live greener together!!
To celebrate the fact that everyday is Earth Day, Cascadian Farms and MyBlogSpark is giving one of my readers a “Live Green Together” prize pack that includes Cascadian Farm cereals and granola bars, including: Fruitful O´s cereal, Cinnamon Crunch cereal, Chocolate Chip Chewy granola bars, Dark Chocolate Almond Granola, Dark Chocolate Almond granola bars, Oats & Honey granola, and an eco-friendly grocery bag!
To enter to win just leave a comment indicating what changes your family has made (or plan to make) in an effort to live greener. I will choose a winner on Thursday 5/6/10.
Disclosure: Cascadian Farm and MyBlogSpark provided me with information as well as a gift pack for me and my winner!
I always walking around the house unplugging whatever I can find, I’m sure it drives my husband nuts. Also we started composting organic material from the kitchen and yard.
I use reusable bags for my shopping. We also frequent thrift shops and yard sales frequently rather than buy new. We grow our own veggies during the summer then freeze and can them.
We have implemented recycling into our life as a daily routine. It is unreal to me how after 7 days we have our recycle bin stuffed. There is so much packaging that we as a country throw away instead of recycling!
We have not turned on our air conditioner this season even when the outside temp is above 80 deg F. We have our window opened when we are home and use many fans. We recycle all papers, give away unused things to charities, and is on our way to one bag of trash per week. It’s so worth it. Thanks!
I try to do what I can! Only using lights necessarily, reusable bags. Limiting water usage, cold washer cycles, walk places when we can. Umm…I can’t think of any more, but I certainly try to do stuff!
I use reusable shopping bags, recycle as much as possible and shop second hand, consignment, and thrift shops to buy used instead new as much as possile.
I love the Meal Planner one, I guess I never really thought about how much food is wasted but now that I have started being more aware of what I buy and what I have I hardly ever waste food anymore!!
I try to use resuable shopping bags and keep turning off the lights. We also just planted some more trees in our yard.
We shop for our clothes at thrift stores, use reusable bags 90% of the time, and we cloth diapered our baby. Thanks for the chance to win!
We are using reusable bags and recycling even when our complex does not have curbside pick up for it. 🙂 Thanks for having a giveaway!
We’re just getting started by turning off the water and power whenever possible, using green shopping bags, planting a vegetable garden for the 2nd summer, reusing any containers (i.e. diaper wipes containers that I get using coupons for maybe .50 hold a lot of little things and fit nicely in the pantry with my stockpile!) and using recycled products – like tp, paper towels and trash bags.
We have made an effort to buy more local produce and dairy, and turn off lights/unplug chargers when not in use. I also use reusable bags when shopping and combine trips (shop on my way home from work.)
We are planting flowers and trees. Since moving to an area that recycles, we are recycling everything we can. And, since I loathe my house being overtaken by plastic bags, I use cloth shopping bags.
We are eating more organic, fresh foods and less processed stuff. We are homebrewing our own beer and making our own bread & kimchi. And we have our own (organic) vegetable & herb garden and compost pile.
Recyle, Recyle Recyle….anything and everything. Bought reusable containers and stopped buying bottled water.
I’m using re-usable bags for my grocery shopping trips!
we unplug all appliances when we are not using them!
We always take our reusable shopping bags to Publix!
We have been using reusable bags for close to a year now. Several months back, I called our local recycling company and had them bring me bins. I feel better knowing that I’m not cluttering up our landfills!
Our family tries to do our part to help the Earth. We recycle everything that is recyclable. We no longer buy bottled water. Each family member has a reusable bottle that we use for water. We quit using baggies for snacks and lunches and use reusable containers. We’ve worked very hard to help teach our children to be wise consumers and not wasteful consumers.
We are going to try unplugging appliances and electronics when not in use 🙂
We have place milk jugs with rocks into our toilets, and hang some of our clothes out on a line, as well as turn off all our electronics when they are not in use. We also do paperless billing when offered for our bills!!!!
Sooo much. We no longer use the car air-con and at home we limit the use. We no longer eat cows not fed grass or pigs & chickens kept in confined spaces. We recycle almost everything. I now never buy products I do not need regardless of the overage (CAN YOU BELIEVE IT!!!). I always use recycled bags for my shopping. This includes places other than Publix like Belk et and my children now know that in order to recieve new toys they must give one up to a new home.
Reusing plastic containers!
Wow, what a great giveaway! Cascadian Farm is our absolute favorite! We love getting the whole family involved in being as green as possible – from a plant-based diet focused on natural and organic food, to recycling, conserving water and using reusable water bottles and lunch / shopping bags. As my kids (both of whom were cloth diapered) would say, “Every day is Earth Day!”
We conserve water and light usage and are starting to use reusable bags.
Another great giveaway! We are faithful recyclers, I use reusable bags when shopping, and we are slowly converting to energy-saving light bulbs:)
We have a great big garden in the back yard now! We are trying the square foot garden method.
We turn all electronics off that we don’t use. Turn all the lights off when we are not in that room. We recycle paper and plastic. I use reusable shopping bags. We set our A/C or heat a few degrees hotter/colder. We use reusable water bottles and plastic bowls.
We are trying to eat more organically as well as use reusable shopping bags.
My husband and I compost and also have finally finished replacing all our light bulbs with CFLs.
We hae done several small things to live greener and waste less. I am using reusable grocery bags for all purchases. We have plante a garden. We are using less heat and air conditioning and we are shopping at Goodwill.
I have been using cloth bags for about a year, composting for 5 years, and now we have paper recycling in town… so that will start too.
We are turning our a/c up a few degrees. Also we have stopped using water bottles and have bought a britta pitcher. We do not use plastic grocery bags at all. If I just have a few items I opted to carry them out of the store if I forget my recycled bags. At the preschool were I teach I recyle anything I can into art projects.
We recycle, use reusable shopping bags, and shop consignment sales, but one of the biggest things we have done is switch from bottled water to a Brita filter and reusable bottles. We were going through a case or more of water a week, what a lot of bottles.
We are trying to recycle. I am thinking about starting a compost.
I use reusable bags & reusable water bottles, replaced light bulbs with cfls, and recycle as much as possible.
We’re eating less meat. We recently replaced all our older toilets with low-flow toilets. And I print all my coupons on paper that my husband brings home from the recycle bins at work 🙂
We recycle, use CFL light bulbs when the regular lights are out, and I turn off all the lights when we leave a room.
We use reusable bags and they are so much better than plastic bags that we can’t believe it took us so long to do it! My husband is also planning on starting a compost
We recycle (even though we have to drive 1 mile to do it ourselves), I always use reusable bags, and I just planted my 3rd garden. This year I am going pesticide FREE!
We switched from disposable diapers to cloth! If that’s not a noble sacrifice worthy of winning, I don’t know what is!
Beside recycling, I pledged as “Food Planner”. I’m trying not to waste any foods.
My husband and I are reforesting our 10 acre lot and planted about 3,000 trees/bushes so far. We have bought small trees at a state nursery to save our cost and have only planted trees native to our area. It will lessen our mowing of the lot (saving fuel), help shelter & feed the wild animals there, bring us shade and cleaner air all around us, among other countless benefits!
We have stopped drying clothes in the dryer or dishes in the washer!
Borrowed a kilowatt meter from the library – it shows how much electricity appliances use. Bought a drying rack for air-drying clothes!
We use reusable bags when we go grocery shopping.
We recycle a lot and I use reuseable bags at the stores- love how little plastic bags I have piling up now! My husband has a compost.
We don’t eat animal foods and have a large organic garden where we get 50% of our vegetables!
I just recently switched to reuseable bags for my shopping. 🙂
I have stopped buying paper plates and paper cups. We only use the washable! We also recycle and I try to only use one garbage bag per week…
We use the reusable shopping bags that we get free with so many great coupons, thanks to you!!!
I have made my kitchen paperless, hang clothes out to dry, shop yard sales and thrift shops. I am trying to use green bags for shopping. We just got chickens for eggs. I am going to try in the near future to put in a garden and compost.
I just heard about saving 10% by unpluging items when not in use and I am working on that.
My family and I plan to be green by: using reusable shopping bags, washing our cars on the lawn to water our lawn while washing the cars, reducing our driving speed to no faster than 55 MPH, turning off the water while brushing our teeth, turning off the lights when we leave a room, and hanging clothes to dry. Making simple changes become habit and really add up. I love the big push for reusable shopping bags!!
I have drastically reduced the amount of meat we eat, I am actually trying to go vegan. Raising animals for food is terrible for the environment. I have also started recycling everything I can which has reduced the amount of trash we have to dispose of. I have also started using reusable bags.
We always use reusable bags for shopping. We have changed from baggies for kids lunches to containers only. We just began composting…An excellent way to make free compost for lawn/garden and has reduced our garbage amount by 25%.
Keep thermostat on 78, use reusable shopping bags, kids take lunch in washable containers, donate old household and clothing to charity, donate overstocked pantry items to local food pantry, keep lights off when not needed….. WE LOVE Cascadian Farms!
My family has replaced all the lightbulbs in our house, we also use reusable shopping bags, recycle over half of our ‘garbage’, turning off lights/appliances when they are not in use.
We participate in curbside recycling, have our own compost pile (which has sprouted potato plants, by the way!), and use reusable bags. Love, love, LOVE Cascadian Farms.
We do reusable bags, recycle, trying to switch to energy efficient bulbs, garden, compost, ride bikes or walk places rather than drive, turn off lights in rooms we’re not in…actually I should be saying this is what I do, my husband is a creature of habit and is slowly getting the hang of things. I did have to dig out the recycling “overfill” that he snuck in the trash bin last week, sneaky. Also, I’m in the process of doing what I thought I never would: converting to cloth diapers and a clothes drying rack!
We use reusable shopping bags & I turn off lights constantly. We buy things at thrift stores and repair things instead of replacing them when we can.
For Earth Day my son and I made a butterfly/hummingbird garden in our backyard, and also put up a birdhouse and birdfeeder. This past Sunday we went to the beach, which has not yet been affected by the oil spill, and brought a garbage bag which we filled with garbage that was blowing around the beach.
My family has started to use reusable shopping bags instead of plastic. We also keep our house very dark! Haha! We turn off all lights when we aren’t using them.
intergrating more organic food and recycling, change out old light bulbs, show the kids how much energy we use-my husband did a game to see who could make the kilowatt go the slowest-pretty cool-became part of freecycle..feels good to conserve
We have been using reusable shopping bags and shop at consignment stores for our clothes — cheeper and better for the earth!
My husband and I work for the same company so we carpool. We also use reusable bags, are active recyclers and we compost food scraps. We are loving the new Lays recycleable chip bags!
We use reusable shopping bags and changed most of the light bulbs to energy savers and planning to start our vegggie garden.
We use reusable shopping bags, energy efficient lightbulbs, grow our own vegetables and have started a compost pile. Oh yea, and we recycle!
We have started using reusable shopping bags and buying more organic foods. We tried the Cascadian Farms granola bars that were on sale for Earth Day and they are incredible! Love them!
We compost, recycle, use reusable bags, use energy saving light bulbs and trying to start a garden of our own….
My family is trying to live a greener life by using cloth diapers, Energy efficient light bulbs, buy more organic foods and cleaners (Thanks to you and your web site I can afford to buy them now with coupons), we recycle ALL our paper and most plastic, we flush less :), we cut all our plastic bottle holders, and even my 4 yr old son knows to pick up and throw away trash when we see it floating around parking lots. He says, “We need to keep the earth clean or a police will get us!” I promise I did not tell him a police would get him if he litters 🙂
I am not using as much disposable items such as paper plates and plastic cups. I am also using “green” cleaners.
We try to eat organic as often as possible, we compost, recycle, use reusable bags, have replaced traditional lightbulbs with CFL bulbs, use green cleaners/soaps, and have energy star appliances and electronics.
We do what we can by leaving appliances unplugged when not in use and I always use reusable bags.
We have changed all of our light bulbs, use reusable shopping bags and have planted our own garden. We are working very hard at becoming more conscious of how we can change our ways to become more environmentally friendly.
We use reusable bags and are starting to buy more organic foods! BTW, it’s every day not everyday 🙂
We use reusable bags, try not to eat a lot of meat and processed foods, turn off computers when not in use, and use reusable containers. .
This is a great give away. Thank you for the opportunity. Well, we have just recently made some changes but we are making them. I have replaced almost all of my lightbulbs to the energy smart bulbs, we are recycling which has cut our trash bag usage tremendously, buying more and more organic foods at the store. Unfortunately I do not have a garden yet, but it is definitely in the plans in the near future. I have bought I don’t know how many reusable shopping bags and Publix has some really cute ones here lately. I also bought a really nice one at CVS the other day. When going to the gas station for a quick drink and/or snack I do not let my cashier bag the items I carry them out by hand. Whatever plastic bags we do still have get reused for things like bathroom trash cans and such. I use the big bag that the toilet paper comes in and use it as a trash bag in my bathroom. We have invested in a Brita filter for our home cutting back bottles of water. Changed our thermostat out for a digital one. I have resealed all my windows and doors with weatherstripping to eliminate any gaps thus reducing the need to run the AC/Heat constantly. We use ceiling and floor fans with doors and windows open whenever possible (it does get muggy here in GA). The scraps of paper from printing and clipping coupons the kids use to draw on and for art projects. Use cold water in the washing machine. Except for whites and towels (sorry!!) it kills germs better. I have stopped throwing big boxes away that items come in such as TV’s computers etc. I have been reusing those for Yard Sale signs and again projects for the kids. My items in the garage and attic that are stored are in plastic containers which I have been reusing for years. We have also changed over most of our batteries to rechargable batteries. Uhm let me see. Oh we changed out the aerators on our faucets to ones that use 32% less water. My 5 year old wears all the hand me downs from my oldest son which were salvagable. Once pants are too raggedy or have too many holes I cut them down to shorts for the summertime. We are turning lights out more often. Most electronics get unplugged when not in use. Bread bags have been reused for sandwich bags. I use my slow cooker more than I use my oven. Also we have just recently purchased a new oven which uses less electricity. I love using candles in the evening and turning the TV off. I have cut my family’s Television viewing time by half. I bring my food to work in a reusable lunch box instead of eating out all the time. That is all I can think of at this time. Man I didn’t realize just how many changes we have made until I actually sat down and wrote this comment. It’s amazing. Well I hope everyone has a great evening and Good luck to all of you.
Oh I forgot. I have been recycling my old cell phones and ink cartridges. Also, just today I went through a super huge stack of papers/mail in my house. I have managed to consolidate almost a whole ream of papers and envelopes from junk mail. which the papers I can use the back of to print coupons on. i.e. Anything that I receive, statements and such, I scan and save on the computer. If it does not have any valuable information on it such as social security number, name , birthday etc. I just use the back to print my coupons. It looks like this will save me a ton of paper. Again thanks for your wonderful website and all you do.
We use reusable bags, turn off unused lights, time shower water consumption, open windows 5 to 6 months out of the year. We live in northern Alabama so we can do this.
we recycle and always bring our own bags.
We’ve been using reusable shopping bags for our grocery trips. I also just made the switch to reusable nursing pads today!
I use reusable shopping bags and I am now turning off the power strip that has our TV, DVD player, etc as well as the power strip in my home office area when not in use. As the temperature rises outside, I am trying to keep my thermostat high so we don’t use as much energy.
We bring our own grocery bags and thanks to you – have a good number for free. Same with light bulbs, we are gradually replacing and at a good price(thanks to you). We are becoming recycling fanatics – thanks for all your advice!
We replaced all lightbulbs witht the CFL’s, in all ceiling fans only have 2 bulbs instead of 3. Lights are off if no one is in the room. Unplug all items that can be unplugged when not in use. Use reusable bags when shopping in stores. Have been recycling for a while now and still learning all that can be recycled. Added weighted water bottles to toilets to save water, teaching better water habits to the little ones. Trying to do our part little by little. Love Cascadian Farms. Thanks for the giveaway.
My family is a one-car family, which means that my boys and I walk almost everywhere we go. We also have our own little garden, and our love for green is slowly spreading across our city neighborhood.
Well, just eating less junk food and more homemade food makes it so that we use up less packaging. Plus, we are gardening more this year. A friend and I also barter goods. We are also a one car family! Hmmm. it’s hard to think about what else when you’ve gotten used to doing certain things. But I know in the future I would like us to do more recycling and helping on beach clean-up days, things we used to do but just got out of the habit.
We always grow an organic garden.
I use reusable grocery bags when I shop. I recycle paper in our house.
We currently do many of the things that are pledges on Cascadian Farms list: We unplug electronics/appliances when not in use, swap clothes or pass them along to others, and reduce our speed when driving. I also have several reusable bags and when I do get a plastic bag, I use it till it falls apart & we have also closed air vents in the rooms that we don’t use regularly (like our guest bathroom/bedroom). This year I’m going to take the initiative to be less wasteful and use what food we have at home before buying more as well as replacing the rest of our bulbs with energy savers (we have already started this process at home).
reusable bags for shopping, recycle plastic and paper
I have started using reusable bags at the grocery store..which I LOVE!!! My boys carry sandwiches in washable containers to greatly reduse the amount of baggies we use. Every bit helps 🙂
We are using reusable shopping bags, not purchasing water bottles, hanging clothes out to dry, replaced all light bulbs with CFL and turned up the thermostat.
We recycle, use reusable cloth grocery bags, and shop consignment sales for much of my children’s clothes. We have a house rule to turn off all lights if they are not being used and have taught the children not to run the water while they are brushing their teeth or washing their hands. I buy mostly organic (as much as possible) and LOVE Cascadian Farms! For the past several years, I have planted a few organic tomato and pepper plants, but this year my husband built me a larger raised garden where I have several organic vegetables and herbs planted. yay! Also, we built a trellis and planted muscadines, and planted 2 blueberry plants as well. Baby steps, but we continue to add more “green” to our lives each year. 🙂
We are determined to begin recycling and to use our reusable grocery bags.
Last year we switched to a solar hot water tank. We bring our own cloth bags to the store. We also have a huge insulated bag for cold items that we bring along. The bag keeps things cold for many hours, which helps us organize our errands, and shopping trips. We have switched over our light bulbs to the curly, more efficient ones. One new idea I came up with was to fill these huge planters we had with capped plastic bottles, to make them lighter, and also to use less potting soil in them. There are not to many rocks to put in the bottom of the planters here in Florida, so this worked out great! Thanks for another fun contest.
I made the change to cloth diapers when my daughter was just a few months old (so about 2 years ago now), we use reusable bags every time we go grocery shopping, the majority of our light bulbs are CFLs, I use green cleaning products instead of harsh chemicals, the list could go on and on.
Awesome giveaway! Thank you! I’ve recently made the switch to reuseable bags, we make sure that we wear out our clothes or else give them to charity if there’s still life in them when we’re through, and we have cut back on the amount of meat we consume.
We have put everything on power strips so that at night (or when not in use) we can just pull one plug and disconnect everything in the whole room. This has really saved us on our power bill. Also, we have maximized our recycling (NOTHING plastic goes in our regular trash can, etc.). During the warmer months, we hang our clothes and linens out on our back deck to air dry.
I’ve started a composte…and we recycle. Trying to not buy as much organic as we can afford, and try not to flush the toilet as much either. 🙂
correction from my post…”Trying to buy as much organic as we can afford….” Sorry about that. Thanks.
Great giveaway Michelle! I started using Cascadian frozen fuits & vegetables to make homemade baby food, and smoothies. Then I tried the cereals. You have to try the Dark Almond Chocolate Granola in some organic yogurt its to die for. My kids favorite snack. The Peanut pretzel granola bars are my favorite.
What have we done to live a greener life: breastfeeding, making homemade baby food, cloth diaper, we recycle.
I always use the reusable shopping bags. They are so much easier to carry, and they hold as much as 2-3 plastic bag.
I unplug everything from cell phone charges to our toaster. The kids even go around turning off lights.
We also grow a organic garden, and started a compost this past weekend.
We also pay all bills online and don’t get paper bills in the mail. Saves me the paper pile up, and money for stamps. I love http://www.mycheckfree.com you can pay bills free.
We use the energy saving light bulbs. During the day I open blinds and let the natural light in and leave the lights off.
I make only 1 trip to town a week.
And thanks to you for the money you allow me to save we only eat organic meats, milk, fruits & vegetables.
Better for us and the environment. And
I use reusable bags when I shop. We are also using more organic foods and greener cleaning products. I have been able to do this because of couponing! I really appreciate your site!
We use the reusable bags for all of our shopping. We also use the energy saving light bulbs. In the last month, we have started recycling our plastics, newspapers and cardboard boxes. We have cut our garbage in half.
I encourage my kids to turn of the light when they leave the room, use both sides of the papers when they are writing or drawing, use empty cereal boxes and egg for art project , I use the fans instead of the air conditioner , I try to combine a lot of my shopping in one trip.
Just started using reusable bags… we stopped buying trash bags last year and just use the grocery bags we get…. Because of coupons I can buy some organic and earth friendly cleaners 🙂 We always have played a cloths swap game (with 3 kids this is a must) We have the thermostat set to above 80 and just turn on a fan when we are in the room… most of all, I am teaching my kids to be responsible with turning off the water while we brush our teeth, not wasting water by puting clean clothes in the hamper, and in the summer we had our clothes out in the sun to dry…. 🙂
We are eating more organic, which is possible now that we are saving so much money! We also are composting, gardening, and using cloth instead of paper for spills and cleaning. We have always recycled, and are pleased that we have 2-3 times the amount of recycling than we do trash.
We use reusable Publix bags when shopping. In addition, we use energy saving light bulbs, turn off the water when it is not being used, turn off computers when they are not used, gardening, recycling, and using plastic shopping bags for small trash cans or recycling them.
We are checking everything before we throw it away to see if it can be recycled instead.
We use cloth diapers, reuse anything that can be reused and recycle it after we’ve reused it, reusable bags, buy local produce and eggs, turn off electronics, keep general consumption to a minimum, donate any items that still have loving left in them!!!!
Our waterheater just went out. We bought one that is made out of plastic and has a lifetime warrenty on the tank! Yeah! no more leaking tank. But the best part is: we are going to convert it to a solar water heater in the next few years! We also used cloth diapers. Reuse everything we possibly can. We have a compost pile and make regular trips to the recycle center!
Well to be honest, I’m still trying to get the hang of it. But everyday learn something new. Although definitely worth the effort, it’s hard to break old habits. We have started to use reusable bags, although I don’t think I have nearly enough since I started couponing. All the lightbulbs in the house have been changed to CFL. We also got the kids a book on clever “green” ways to reuse things and they are having fun with that. We traded the car in from a Gas Guzzler to a super Gas Saver, talking 40MPG! Light are constantly turned off and energy efficient thermostat installed. Other than that, still working on it, one step at a time.
We have always been into recycling. We compost vegetable scraps, use reusable shopping bags,
recycle newspapers, glass, aluminum, styrofoam and plastic bags. We do art projects with alot of throwaways. We also cut down on our energy use and plan our shopping to cut down on fuel use.
plan to recycle more – wish our area had a service.
I use reusable shopping bags and recycle regularly. I also changed all of our light bulbs to CFLs at the beginning of the year. I also unplug all kitchen appliances that aren’t in use. I recently have begun to get fresh organic fruits and vegetables from local farmer’s markets.
My sister and I–we live together–went and purchased reusable shopping bags and are now using them for shopping trips. We had been saying for months that we should do this, and the week before Earth Day we finally purchased them and are using them. It has been a big change for us–we have LOTS less bags we have to recycle!
And thanks for your blog!!! It has really helped me change the way we shop! We appreciate you.
My family just got done planting our first vegetable garden! I am excited as this is not only a way to save some money, but also make a change that will help the environment. I have also make the change to reusable shopping bags recently and have begun recycling everything I can!
When shopping I take my reusable bags with me. We try to recycle whenever possible.
We recycle, are remembering to use our reusable bags, drink less bottled water, and combine errands to conserve gas.
We just started our greener life this year. Reusable shopping bags, a garden, composting, and watching our electricity consumption are some of the changes so far. Next up – a rain barrel for watering the garden, using more durable/fewer disposable goods, cutting water waste, and finding local foods.
We are doing what we can by using cloth diapers which I made by recycling t-shirts, hanging our laundry out which saves a lot of energy with 7 kids, have my own organic garden and compost piles, buy local produce, meat, eggs and milk. We buy used clothes when we can, recycle our glass, papers, plastic and metal. We set our heat and air responsibly and of course use publix reusable bags. We buy and give away a lot of used items or pick it up free on freecycle.
I use reusable bags when shopping, we changed out light bulbs to energy efficient ones, I recycle like crazy now, I keep the lights off most of the time …during the day we leave all the windows open so we dont have to use the lights.
I buy organic whenever possible. Recently changed to high efficiency heat pumps and washer and dryer.
Reusable bags & re-cycling everything that we can in the house! 😉
We use reusable bag
We switch to low flow shower heads
We recycle newspaper in our house
We switched to CFL bulbs
We use reusable bags
Love the reusable bags, I always keep them in my car so I don’t forget them!
We compost and set the air conditioner thermostat to 78 or higher.
We recycle Everything! Putting recycle bigs in several areas in the house means we don’t forget to recycle simple things that would get missed like shampoo bottles and printer paper. We always use reuseable bags & my daughter brings her lunch to school in reuseable containers instead of constantly throwing away ziploc bags! We are vegetarian and make a huge effort to buy local produce to reduce our carbon footprint. We compost and eat all organic!
Some of my recent couponing efforts have gone to collecting reusable grocery bags and CFL light bulbs. The bags have all been free and the light bulbs have been mostly free or $.50! I have also been able to stockpile a lot more organic food and products thanks to reading your website!
I have started unplugging the unused appliances.
We use reusable grocery bags. We’re using reusable plastic containers for lunch packing instead of one-use ziploc bags. AND! we’re starting to unplug more electronics when they are not in use.
My family and I have done many small things to go greener. The kids have learned to unplug chargers, turn off lights and use less water while showering and brushing their teeth. I am still gathering more reusable bags, all energy efficient bulbs, line drying clothes and keep the thermostat reasonable or off. We’ve been working on going green for a year now and love it 🙂
Our family switched to CFL lightbulbs when they were just the curly weird bulbs! I finally remember to use cloth bags when shopping — or skip a bag altogether (keeps expenses down!) We recycle as much as possible. I find I will bring empty cans and bottles home to recycle them if I am out rather than toss in the trash. I unplug all small appliances and phone chargers when not in use. I try to run as many errands as I can when I go out to save fuel and emissions. I also buy local produce when possible.
We planted a garden & keep our thermostat at 78 or higher!
We use reusable grocery bags; energy-saving lightbulbs and of course we recycle!
My family turns off lights when we leave a room ( sometimes there is still someone in the room, and we did it out of habit!), use reusable bags, do not turn the air on until it is 80 degrees in the house, and use wash rags instead of paper towels. We also have a compost pile ,plus we have a small garden and a 1-acre garden our neighbor shares with us.
I use reusable bags and recycle at home. I need to stop using plastic bags for the kids lunches….and go plastic reusable items.
I have come a long way in this area. A few weeks ago I taught a girls class on ecology and renewed all of my fervor to recycle (paper, boxes, plastic, glass), reuse (throw very little away), and reduce (some weeks, I challenge myself not to go to the store or not to buy one thing that we do not absolutely need). Composting has been a great way to eliminate a lot of our trash. Next month some friends and I are going to have a clothing and book swap. This way of living is not only better for the environment, it is a more frugal and responsible way to live. God calls us to be good stewards of His earth, these are a few small ways I can do that!
We have been recylcing and composting for as long as I can remember. This year we are planting a huge organic garden (harvested strawberries and spinach yesterday). We are now unplugging appliances and computers more often. Using reusable bags too!
We are purging as many chemicals from our home as possible — using all-natural, biodegradable cleaners (or just vinegar and water).
I started using reusable bags, recycling (wow I’m a little ashamed of how much I’ve thrown in the trash before), reducing my speed, switched my lights to cfls, & stopped using my clothes dryer.
We use reusable shopping bags whenever we go to the grocery store!
We do many things to be more green! Such as, reusable bags, recycling, compost pile, buying local produce!
We no longer purchase juice boxes since we cannot recycle them. Not easy with kids in the house!
We use reusable bags; recycle and I recently stopped using napkins.
We have cut out most paper products from our home with the exception of toilet paper. We use cloth napkins and cloth rags for clean up. We have switched to almost all CFL bulbs and we recycle whatever we can. Our trash has gotten down to only 1 bag most weeks (we are a family of four). We are doing what we can to help!
We recycle everything! We use reusable bags and have stopped buying bottled water and use a water purifier instead! That was huge because it really cut back on costs and helps the enviroment!
We participate in our city recycling program recycling glass, paper, aluminum and plastic. This year, we took advantage of our community’s hazardous household waste day to get rid of old paint& electronics. We recycle cell phones through the Cell Phones for Soldiers program and printer cartridges at school. We have made the switch to compact fluorescent lightbulbs and installed a programmable thermostat. I never fill my gas tank to the brim or leave my car idling as that increases the amount of ozone in the air. As we live on a lake, we participate in a yearly watershed clean-up and now use organic fertilizers and natural pesticides. I also use vinegar, water and baking soda as cleaners. All of these steps not only help the environment but also save us money!!:)
I use recycleable bags to shop, and have taught the kids to recycle items like plastic and glass!
We use only green cleaners-HUGE improvement in my asthma besides good for the enviroment. We use reuseable gocery totes, we’ve switched every bulb that we can to CFLs and we use cloth napkins.
My family is starting to live greener. So far, we are using cloth diapers and I am using mama cloths. We are beginning to eat more organic, switching over our lightbulbs and cleaning supplies. And I’ve been trying to stop using so many paper towels and plastic baggies!
We have planted a garden, are taking care of all of our lawn and gardening needs with organic products. We are switching over to all natural and organic products throughout the house and in our fridge. We have bought a programmable thermostat and have added insulation in our attic.
Reusable bags, no plastic water bottles – easy to just use a cup, have a garden in our yard, buy locally grown products, use green cleaners, turn off water when brushing teeth, etc.
We recycle, have started using reusable grocery bags, and try to use cloth towels in place of paper towels to clean up messes! 🙂
I’d love to win this! I LOVE the cascadian farms granola bars I bought last week when they were on sale! I only wish I had bought more!
To go Greener, we have been recycling and using reusable bags when we shop.
This would make my husband’s day…he LOVES Cascadian Farms! He’s a science teacher and earth fanatic, so we do all kinds of things to help save our planet. We compost all our food (minus meat!) so we have very little trash, we use all CFL bulbs, we recycle anything and everything possible…the list goes on!
We use green Publix bags to shop rather than plastic and we started recycling all plastic and paper.
We have plugged our electronics into a main plug that turns on and off. They get turned off individually then at teh main switch. Our next step is a clothes line.
We recycle a lot more (partly because our city is accepting more categories of recyclable materials). We also use energy efficient light bulbs and regulate the thermostat.
We use reusable grocery bags when we shop. We’ve changed to CFL’s light bulbs. I’m making more of an effort to purchase local produce as well as feeding my family cleaner and/or more organic meals. We also recycling all newspapers and magazine the the school recycle bin, which also earns the school extra money!!!
I always use reusable bags when I shop, we have switched to CFL lightbulbs, we only use green cleaners and we recycle just about everything. Our next plan is to start composting.
We recycle and use re-useable bags. We also are now using re-usable water bottles. I am going to try to start buying more local produce this year too.
I have started using reusable shopping bags, and my family now uses reusable drinking bottles for water. I recently heard about washing your car on the lawn, and that tops my list for my next green act.
We use reusuable bags to grocery shop with and recycle our papers, plastics and cans. We’ve also started recylcling programs for paper products at both my work and my husbands’ work to cut down on paper waste.
We use re-usable shopping bags, have switched almost all out light bulbs to the CFL kind, we try to find a way to reuse a lot of things around the house.
We are using reusable shopping bags, unplugged anything not in use, recycle (everything possible), exploring alternative energy resources for our home and most importantly, we are teaching our child and the children I watch about the importance of taking care of the earth.
I always use Publix reusable shopping bags, but we have now also made it a priority to recycle a lot of things that we used to just toss in the garbage.
I have started using re-usable shopping bags and stopped using bottled water
We use reusable shopping bags, we use CFL light bulbs, we run our dishwasher on the lightest setting to conserve both water and electricity, we line dry a lot of our clothing, we use a programmable thermostat so we don’t heat and cool as much when we are not home, we recycle everything we can, we turn off the water when we’re brushing our teeth, and we open the windows in our house when the weather is nice outside. Most of these things were adopted because my husband is a tightwad and they happen to also save us money! We are looking into composting, too.
I’ve been recycling, composting and using cloth towels/napkins for many years. Something new I am doing is buying organic fruits and vegetables. They are more expensive, but well worth the cost.
Changed light bulbs, use compost piles, and are growing organic veggies!
We’ve made several changes this year. We use reusable bags, changed our light bulbs to CFL, eat vegetarian at least once a week, conserve water, and compost. We love being green!
We’ve started using reuable shopping bags. I didn’t think I would car for them, but they great, don’t tear like the plastic ones and hold a lot more grogeries. I even have the insulated ones for cold stuff!
We do several small things that hopefully help the enviroment. We use recycable bags at Publix, we try to turn off lights when leaving the room, the air conditioner is turned up and we use ceiling fans, we recycle everything possible and we will be trying to grow a few of our vegetables.
We have been recycling everything we can, I use reusable bags when I shop, we also switched our light bulbs, and we are trying to eat organic. We love Cascadian Farms products!!!
I use reuseable grocery bags. We teach the kids how to recycle, and about water conservation. We have also planted a tree every year on Earth day since my girls were born.
We use the reusable bags (have them in all vehicles so you don’t forget) We made the switch last year to one hybrid, we insulated the attic, we use reusable water bottles, we take our recyclables to the county bins, paper to the school, we refill our ink cartridges at home and work and we just put in our garden hubby is planning a rain catch system to help with the watering. We try to buy gently used and wow the list could go on. We use cfl bulbs and are always looking at ways to save, conserve and help the environment.
We have switched to cloth diapers and wipes, reusable shopping bags, and organic or local food/grocery items whenever possible. We are also switching out our light bulbs. We all LOVE Cascadian Farms!
besides reycling everything we can,we are using publix reusable bags. I have also started hanging out all our laundry, as a mother of 5 (3 still living at home) I do alot of laundry… I use cold water and hang everything… socks go in the holes of a laundry basket… smaller items are hung on clothes hangers and put on an ironing board (with the cover off, you will find many holes all away around the board) I hang blankets across two chairs, and larger items on hangers on a old window frame… all this is done under my back porch, I can do this anytime of the day or night and dont have to worry about rain… I has saved our family (i couldnt believe my eyes when I saw this and did the dance of joy) around $100 a month on electric… I will never use my dryer again!!!
Composting is just one of many ways we conserve the earth’s resources. It’s funny because over the years, we have had our next door neighor bring her vegetable scraps to our compost rather than throwing them away. We collect coffee grounds from our church each Sunday. Also when I subsitute teach, I will ask the kids for their banana peels, etc. They now just hand them to me.
We live green everyday in our house by recycling, and basically cutting back on EVERYTHING! We love, love, love Cascadian Farms. YUM!
I can’t share just one, sorry! Here are my top favorites:
(1) I joined a CSA to buy local organic produce about two months ago.
(2) I trade children’s clothing with friends at a big swap party once per year. I also buy and sell some children’s clothing at Kid-to-Kid resale shop
(3) We obtain most of our reading material from the library, but also buy and sell used books at a used book seller for the occasional titles that we buy.
(4) I planted a raised-bed garden for the first time this year. We are calling it our “pizza and salsa” garden, as it includes all the ingredients to make both (except for cheese and crust, of course.) The kids love it!!
We use reusable bags, cloth dish cloths, working on growing more of our food (great for the kids too).
I made the decision that just because I can get juice boxes, pouches cheap with coupons, I should only use these sparingly to save on the extra trash. Instead, I bought reusable drink containers for the kids and we use those for lunches/snacks.
Using reusable bags, recycling everything possible in an area that does not promote recycling, buying drinks in glass containers to be used as water bottles instead of using plastic bottles.
We are trying to greatly reduce or eliminate certain paper products by using cloth napkins, rags instead of paper towels, etc.
My 2 year old and I are planting a square-foot organic garden in our backyard for fresh veggies without all the yucky chemicals. We also use cloth shopping bags & snack bags. 🙂
would love to win. my family recycles everything. we save our bread bags and cut them into strips to put on our electric fences. it is visible to see and you will not run into the fence and it also makes a noise when the wind blows scaring off unwanted animals in the pasture.
RECYCLE! Gosh, I LOVE their granola bars!!!
I always use the reusable bags when shopping. We have switched to green cleaners and laundry detergent. We also recycle everything that can be recycled. I even wash and “reuse” ziploc bags that can be reused. Recently we have began composting all of our scrap foods that can be composted. We are hoping our garden (organic of course) will do really well this year! Our kids are learning to recycle too. Their school has a recycling program that we participate in.
Resusable grocery bags as well as containers instead of plastic baggies for snacks at school. We have also planted a veggie garden this year.=)
I am recycling more!
I am recycling my newspapers
We recycle cans and paper/cardboard, and try to use as little plastic as possible, but when we do use it we recycle it. We ‘recycle’ much of our kitchen scraps into compost for our garden. We are growing much of our own veggies and herbs in our garden. We use ‘green’ homemade cleaners as much as possible.
We participate in our community’s recycle program. We save our kitchen scraps for composting. We reuse what items we are able to. We have a garden. We also turn lights and other appliances off as well as use little water as much as possible.
I was laid off from my job Dec of last year. We decided that we needed to cut back on expenses. One way that we did it was to eliminate our trash pick up. I decided to start recycling, which I had wanted to do for a long time. Another way to reduce our trash was to compost. So, I began doing that as well. I wash ziploc bags, reuse containers that I purchase food in if at all possible. There are so many things that we can do to cut back on our waste and preserve the planet that the good Lord has given us to have charge over. It’s our duty and these measures are small, but they make a HUGE impact. We are saving money and saving a great deal of junk from entering the landfill in our area.
We compost, recycle and garden!
I use cloth diapers, cloth napkins, cleaning rags, cloth food-storage baggies, shopping bags etc. – little to no paper products! We buy organic or natural food and cleaning products as much as possible. Energy-efficient appliances, light bulbs, etc. and turning off everything when it’s not in use! My husband drives a hybrid. We use a lot of what would have been “trash” in homeschooling projects with our older son. Now I am trying to go one step above just turning things off, and start actually unplugging things when not in use. Go green!
We have switched our light bulbs for more energy efficient ones, we recycle everything we can, use a hand towel instead of paper towels and use reuseable shopping bags.
My husband and I started a company called Organic Green Solutions which treats your lawn with all organic materials. We had the most amazing vegetable garden this past year. We recycle in our home and office and re-use and re-purpose everything we possibly can.
I’ve been shutting down my home computer at night. I used to also unplug our entertainment center, but recently fell off the wagon. This post helped remind me to continue doing this!
Thanks!
This year we celebrated Earth Day by getting our first box of organic produce from a buying club that buys in bulk and distributes to the members. We never know what we are going to get each week but that is half the fun. We add to this by using vegetables and fruits from our own garden which we started this year. Our garden soil is from recycled horse manure that has been aged and the veggies grow fast and tall! We even bought the wire around the garden from a garage sale. To end up, we did spring cleaning in our closets and then I took all the discarded linen, shoes, clothes to work where we have a clothing closet. This is an old office that has been converted to a mini thrift store except everything is FREE!!!!!!! Our kids now always think first how something can be reused or what would make it more “green” before we discard or do something. That is the real gift. They are growing up thinking this way now without even having to stop to think green.
I have made slight changes with more recyling and and cleaning up after people when I see they have left a mess. Probably the biggest change is for 21/2 yrs I havent had air conditioning and I live in Florida. Its crazy during the summer. But you just get used to it.
I love Cascadian Farms! We buy organic whenever we can, use reuseable bags, and use stainless steel refillable water bottles. We shop our local farmer’s market and used cloth diapers. Hope I win!
We use CFLs and reusable shopping bags. When we redid our kitchen, we bought energystar appliances, sometimes it seems that the items in our recycling bin outnumber the trash. I utilize Freecycle for items that I might otherwise throw away and I buy most of my son’s clothing from consignment shops and sales. My in-laws have a farm so they give us a lot of produce, and we recycle our egg cartons to them, which they, in turn, give back to us filled with organic eggs!
Our recycling program now accepts pasteboard and office paper! Huge difference in terms of reducing solid waste generated per week.
We use tote bags instead of plastic bags. We unplug our chargers. I turn off our cable modem at night when no one is using it. We recycle and now my 3 year old daughter throws stuff in the bins now.
I use reusable bags when I go to the store. We also use energy saving appliances and light bulbs. I am now planting my own home garden so we can eat fresh organic veggies.
We use tote bags, and return an plastic bags instead of throwing them away. When we go for walks in the neighborhood we always bring a bag and pick up litter along the way. I bring home paper that has print on one side that is going to be thrown out from my work so my kids can draw on the blank side. We have our own Garden!! Organic is the best!
We use CFLs, recycle, use greenbags, eat organic when possible and try to live as simply as possible.
I suppose you can say I was raised quasi=hippy 🙂 LOL Therefore, I/we have ALWAYS recycled, grown veggies, hung laundry, conserved water/electric…we have never purchased plastic or paper towels/plates/napkins etc…use the dishwasher…yes, it does save, if running on full load and energy efficient…but, I am still growing within the green movement…to further myself on my path, I have become more and more organic towards food purchases…my pledge now is to move completely to sustainable foods and give up meat. At least to purchase only organic meat, hormone, antibiotic free.
Ultimately, if possible, I would love to remodel or build a green house. Wouldn’t that be awesome…hopefully the prices for the products will come DOWN. Thanks for this great contest…good luck everyone. Here’s a tip if you don’t have a water saver toilet tank, place a brick or two in take (some put in PLASTIC 🙁 water jugs filled with water) that is an option if you have some laying around…this takes up space in the tank where water would have been so you use less water…also, only water plants early in am or at night…and, if possible one a week or twice a week. 🙂
We are gradually switching to CFL bulbs.
We recycle two bins full a week. We eat mostly organic, we grow our own organic veggies. We use reusable bags and use reusable water bottles, etc. Thanks for the giveaway!
We don’t use plastic bags at all and we recycle anything possible. My dd LOVES to recycle! 🙂
First I have to say that Cascadian Farm granola bars are my kids favorite snack. Just like everyone else we carry reusable bags, use energy saving light bulbs and have already planted our summer garden. Right now we are focusing on teaching our little ones the importance of recycling. They really enjoy learning and have a blast helping mom out.
I feel guilty admitting this, but we JUST started to “go green”. Last week I bought my first reusable bag. YAY! 🙂 I am going to buy one every week until I have enough to only use those. I also thought it was a cute idea to buy a few plan white canvas bags at the craft store and let my kids paint on them to make them part of the process. That way they see how much fun it can be to go green! I also made a call to my city trash and asked for the recycle bins. I want my kids to know how important it is to save our earth!!!
We use reusable bags, recycle the plastic/paper ones we do get, and recycle pretty much anything the recycle guy will take! My son’s school has a bin for newspaper, office paper, and paperboard, so we take those items to his school; it helps the environment and the school gets money for it! I love to eat Cascadian Farms frozen blueberries in my cereal. Yum!
As a family of 8 we do our best. We keep lights off during the day, turn off computers and electronics when not in use. We recently installed a solar water heating system, we have a small garden and have just begun composting our left overs and biodegradeables. We also shop with re-useable grocery bags. We recycle our non-biodegradeable packaging and pass down and pass on to friends outgrown clothing.
We have stopped buying bottles of water and now just use stainless steel ones. Took a bit of getting used to, having to actually fill up a bottle rather than grab and go (so lazy!) but now that I’ve gotten in the habit of filling them the night before it’s not so bad. We have also been trying to get our kids to remember to turn off the lights, tv, computer, etc. when not in use. Our biggest change though would be our organic vegetable garden! It is fantastic watching it grow, and is especially lots of fun for the kids! Now we just hope we actually get some vegetables for ourselves and not just feed those Florida bugs…
Our biggest change is that we have started to eat vegan 2-3 nights a week. We also don’t buy new furniture, I hunt yard sales and freecycle. I make most of our clothing and my husband carpools to work. Not only are we helping to save the planet we are saving a lot of money!
My family and I have taken many steps to reduce our impact on the environment. We have: started using reusable bags for all of our shopping, we only use CFL lightbulbs, we conserve as much electricity as we can, we try to drive as few miles per day as possible, and we make it a point to recycle everything that we can.
We do a lot, actually! Florescent bulbs, reusable bags, container garden (we only have a balcony), recycle/repurpose things. 🙂 We really need to do more flat out recycling, though. So that is my goal!
I use CFL’s, recycle anything and everything possible, conserve water, and avoid using paper products.
Lately, I’ve switched to making almost all of my cleaning products at home and only using “green” ingredients when I do make them.
We have switched to CFLs and Recycle like crazy!
