I have received a bunch of emails about the voluntary Similac recall. Here is the info from the site:
Abbott is initiating a proactive, voluntary recall of certain Similac-brand, powder infant formulas. Abbott is recalling these products following an internal quality review, which detected the remote possibility of the presence of a small common beetle in the product produced in one production area in a single manufacturing facility. The United States Food and Drug Adminstration (FDA) has determined that while the formula containing these beetles poses no immediate health risk, there is a possibility that infants who consume formula containing the beetles or their larvae, could experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat as a result of small insect parts irritating the GI tract. If these symptoms persist for more than a few days, a physician should be consulted.
The recall of these powder infant formulas includes:
- Certain Similac powder product lines offered in plastic containers.
- Certain Similac powder product lines offered in 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce and 12.9-ounce cans
To immediately find out if the product in your possession is included in this recall, parents and caregivers should visit THIS site, and type in their lot number to determine if their product is affected, or call (800) 986-8850.
No Abbott liquid infant formulas are impacted. Products not involved in the recall include all Abbott Nutrition liquid ready-to-feed and concentrated infant formulas and all powder and liquid specialty formulas, such as Similac Expert Care™ Alimentum®, Elecare ®, Similac Expert Care™ Neosure ®, Similac® Human Milk Fortifier, and metabolic formulas for inherited disorders.
Thanks to everyone who emailed!
I just purchased 2 23.2 oz plastic containers from Publix in Newnan, GA this past weekend and found out that one was recalled – the other was not. So just FYI!
I went to Publix today to see what formula they had available to replace my recalled Advance. They’d pulled all the powder and only had one ready to feed left, so I snapped it up. I had a coupon that expired yesterday for $5 off two Similac powders, and they graciously extended it until after they get a new, larvae-free stock of Similac. Just another reason I love Publix too.
Just in case you have a few of these cans (like I do), you can take your cans back to Publix and get reimbursed (full price!). They’ll do the leg work for you and send it back to get their reimbursement.
Thank you for posting this! My Mom called me last night because she knew I had just bought some formula from Publix. It was Enfamil, but still knowing this came out is great. We don’t have the news on our tv (we never upgraded to digital) and I’m not a news reader online! So again, thank you for keeping us well informed! 🙂
My granddaughter was on the Similac sensitive, Isomil Soy. Every time she would eat (drink) her formula, it kept coming up! This never had happened before. My daughter changed her to the Gerber and it didn’t happen again…. until her husband gave her a bottle with the Similac, not knowing she had quite the Similac the day before.
Thinking it was a virus, etc., she took her to the doctor, who could find nothing wrong, i.e. stomach virus, etc., as there weren’t those typical symptoms with those types of viruses such as fever, etc. He just thought it may be that her reflux had returned.
My daughter even checked on line about a month ago to see if there may be others who had had the same problem with the Similac, but nothing was posted on the similac site yet.
Then we heard about the recall this morning and the two containers she had at her home, as well as the 3 I have at my home, since I keep her often, were ALL on the recall list.
I heard a doctor this morning on tv make light of this calling the insects “protein”. Not funny. This baby was a preemie when she was born, and although she is 10 months old now, and healthy, it kind of irritated me. There has to be more efficient quality control. Babies and young children and the elderly are the most likely to have a serious problem with any product with a deficiency, as they are our most vulnerable.
We will be taking all of these back to Publix…as that is where we shop.
Thank you for your information! I might not have seen this on tv, as I don’t listen to tv every day…but just happened to be listening this morning.
Theres have been so many recalls lately in food and medications that is a little bit scary..
I bought 2 plastic containers of Similac with my $5 off coupon this week then to find out 2 days later they were both on the recall list. When I ran into Publix on my way home from work last night to get something for my 9 month old to drink (ahhh, freaking out a bit!) the cashier made sure to tell me the powder was recalled (didn’t have it with me to return, but she saw I was buying the ready to feed variety). I love Publix. They are so nice and helpful.
Glad my son is no longer using formula as this was the brand I used…. So gross to think! And by the way…… Facebook!
Another reason why you should breastfeed your children.
